The Suches Community Center was one of the first projects to receive funding from the 2008 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.

The Union County School System had completed replacement of the old gym at the Woody Gap School and donated the reclaimed elements of the building to the county. This formed the nucleus of the reconstructed gym which is now a part of the community center. Added to the front of this was space for a large kitchen, two meeting rooms, rest rooms and some storage space.

The facility has been furnished with help from the Suches Fire Department, Union County Rec Department, the Union County Library and Zion Baptist Church as well as other agencies and too many Suches residents to mention.

A committee of Suches residents manages the operation of the center under the oversight of the Union County Recreation Department. Policies and fee schedules have been developed to encourage community use at reasonable rates while still being good stewards of county resources.

The uses of the Suches Community Center are many and varied and the facility can be tailored to fit a variety of uses. Visitors to Suches as well as residents are encouraged to visit the center to learn how they can put it to use.
